It’s the fourth time in a decade that the island has been left with the green light to buy a tablet of the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra. The move comes on the heels of another round of legal action by Pfizer’s anti-impotence drug Cialis.
The suit alleges that the company, which has been accused of approving Viagra’s sale to overseas markets, has been charged with violating the federal anti-spingal laws. According to a news release from the federal court in Florida, the drugmaker has been accused of taking a “sudden, deliberate and outrageous” approach.
The suit alleges that Pfizer, which manufactures Viagra on the island, has been ordered to halt supplies to the island since the US Supreme Court of Appeals upheld the FDA’s decision last year to deny approval for the drug in 2007.
“The defendants’ actions have caused serious harm to the public,” the news release reads.
“The pharmaceutical companies have used the legal system in order to make Viagra available to the general public. This practice has led to the deaths of millions of men and injured their health.”
In a statement on Pfizer’s website, the company said: “Viagra is a prescription medication and we will not tolerate or approve it.”
The suit seeks compensatory and punitive damages from the defendants.
